The Liminal D&D Project & Backrooms Dungeon Kit | Free and Open Source Project

This is an invitation to a project I’ve been obsessing over for awhile now, after learning that there was a word for a feeling I tried to describe for years. That feeling is liminality, as in liminal spaces, and is hard to quantify. If you know, you know.

Because of the literal years of deep ponderance I have put into liminality, it would kind of be a waste of human thought-power if I don’t turn it into something useful.

I am developing a Backrooms Dungeon Kit designed for tabletop RPGs like D&D 5e (2024). It supports both sandbox and plot-driven campaigns and is a module for my world at large, Dreamview. It will consist of maps, atomic events, supporting materials, and other tools for dungeon masters to use as they wish.

I have a couple different difficulty settings in mind – survival per the back rooms lore, and adventure – much less lethal but with all the haunting themes intact.

This is my genuine and earnest attempt to translate my extensive experience with liminal spaces like hotels, hospitals, bars, and schools at night and my love of the community-driven lore into a project for everyone. I have worked third shift, lived the night life, and run in dark circles. Along with my writing work and game design, I feel it puts me in unique position.

I am making this project for my own players, so I figure I could just make it available now that everyone is talking about The Backrooms.

This project is entirely open-source, because The Backrooms and the liminal space community created the foundation at no charge to me. The initial map sets are soon to be available for download via GitHub. Several maps are done. I am checking with The Backrooms Wiki for their feelings on this before I post the link.

More updates will follow as development continues.

      Safe travels, wanderers.
