FAQ: Using Nerd Culture to Find D&D Groups
Is Nerd Culture really 100% free?
Absolutely! No gold pieces required. Nerd Culture is 100% free to use, whether you’re looking to find a D&D group, make a living as a professional DM, create a new campaign, or just connect with fellow adventurers.
We don’t charge you to make a profile, create a group, join a game, or explore the site. Want to search for D&D players near you or join a virtual campaign? Free. Want to post your own group, organize sessions, or run your first one-shot? Also free.
Unlike some other platforms, we don’t take a cut from DMs, we don’t hide features behind a paywall, and we don’t nickel-and-dime you for rolling initiative.
Some professional DMs may charge for their services (especially really advanced ones), but we don’t touch your transactions or take any fees at all.
We’re here to help you find your party, tell your story, and roll with people who get it, without ever paying to play.
How does Nerd Culture work?
It’s easier than casting Mage Missiles.
Start by creating your free profile, whether you’re a player, DM, or the bard who just wants to vibe. Most fields are optional, and you control your privacy settings, so you can share your favorite character builds or keep things mysterious like a rogue in a tavern corner.
Then, search for D&D players near you (or anywhere in the endless planes). Our member and group search tools let you filter by location, system, playstyle, and more to help you find the perfect adventuring party.
The real magic happens in Groups and Events. Create or join campaigns, plan sessions, post recaps, and share your epic tales. Want to host a one-shot? Run a beginner-friendly workshop? Coordinate your Curse of Strahd survivors’ support group? You can do that here.
Oh, and one more thing: we’ve got a Code of Conduct as strong as a paladin’s oath. Be respectful, inclusive, and kind… or you’ll be booted faster than a crit fail on a persuasion check on that tavern bartender.
How do I find a D&D group near me?
Use Nerd Culture’s powerful member and group search tools to discover active Dungeons & Dragons games in your area. Filter by location, play style, experience level, and hangout preference (virtual or in-person) to find your perfect match.

Can I use Nerd Culture to find people with similar interests?
Glad you asked, we built Nerd Culture for exactly that.
Start by creating your free profile and choosing your favorite Nerd Cultures (that’s what we call our interest tags—they’re like your character sheet, but for your real-life passions). Whether you’re into D&D, cosplay, Minecraft, anime, K-pop, crafting, or even competitive spreadsheeting (we see you, data wizards), your interests help match you with like-minded adventurers across the platform.
Once your profile is set, use our powerful search filters to find other members based on shared interests, location, playstyle, hangout preferences (virtual or in-person), availability, and more. You can also explore groups, forums, and public events to jump into the conversation or start something brand new.
Looking to make real connections? You can:
- Message someone directly or hop into a group chat
- Join an event—from one-shots to weekly meetups
- Create your own group for your favorite hobby or game
- Comment, post, and share your stories, wins, and favorite dice disasters
Whether you’re an extroverted bard or a quiet monk who observes from the shadows, there’s a place for you here.
Pro tip: Check out our Member Search and Group Search tutorial videos to get the most out of your adventure on our platform.
What kind of groups can I create?
Pretty much any kind you can imagine, and then some!
Whether you’re a Dungeon Master looking to run an ongoing campaign, a player hoping to organize a weekly one-shot night, or someone who just wants to create a place to nerd out about subclasses and spell lists, Nerd Culture gives you the tools to build the exact group you need.
You can create:
- Free or paid D&D campaigns with custom schedules and group chats
- One-shot groups for casual or experimental games
- Beginner-friendly D&D spaces for teaching and learning
- Player-only groups to form parties before you find a DM
- DM groups for sharing prep, building homebrew worlds, or finding new players
- Virtual or in-person game nights
- Community hangouts for discussing lore, mechanics, characters, or memes
You can also create fandom-based groups, event-specific groups, and supportive communities for everything from worldbuilding and miniature painting to crafting terrain or roleplaying as your favorite NPC.
There’s no limit to how many groups you can create or join. Plus, we don’t gatekeep features behind paywalls.
Want to see how it’s done? Check out our Group Creation Tutorials, where we walk you through building everything from an epic campaign hub to a cozy little lore club.
Can I message with other users directly on Nerd Culture?
We make that super easy (and super fun) to communicate with other members as you search for adventures or once you find your party.
Nerd Culture has a built-in real-time messaging and discussion features that lets you chat, share, plan sessions, and even hop on video calls without ever needing to leave the platform. Whether you’re scheming with your rogue, arguing over loot, or scheduling your next session, we’ve got the tools for it.
Messaging Features Include:
- One-on-one private messages and group chats
- Dedicated discussion spaces for campaigns, hobbies, or events
- Image, file, and link sharing right in the chat
- Built-in GIF & meme search (Giphy integration for peak chaotic energy)
- Emoji reactions, threaded replies, and message organization
- Voice and video calls when typing just won’t cut it
- Encrypted & secure (because privacy isn’t optional—it’s standard)
And here’s the best part: you’re in control.
Customize who can contact you, report any unwanted behavior, and block anyone who rolls a natural 1 on basic decency. All conversations are protected with modern privacy tools, so you can focus on friendships, not red flags.
Whether you’re planning an epic dungeon crawl, scheduling a one-shot, or just swapping memes between sessions, Nerd Culture keeps your crew close and your chats safe.

How does Nerd Culture keep users safe?
🛡️ Let’s be real: every great adventure needs some safety tools in the pack. That’s why Nerd Culture was built with privacy, control, and security in mind, right from the start.
You have full control over your profile visibility, communication preferences, and how you interact with others on the platform. If you’re here to find a Dungeon & Dragons group, share your favorite character builds, be a professional DM, or just scroll through the best collection of D&D memes… we make sure you’re safe doing it.
🔐 Here’s how we keep the realm protected:
- Full profile privacy controls: set who can see your info, field by field
- Report, restrict, or block any user, message, or content with just a click
- Connection-based messaging: no unsolicited messages from strangers
- Automatic suspension & banning tools for abusive behavior
- Negative phrase filtering & detection across all public and private areas
- Email verification & MFA (multi-factor authentication) to keep accounts real and secure
- Invisible reCAPTCHA v3 defenses in multiple spots
- Encrypted messaging & calls: we never store chat logs or voice/video data
And most importantly? Our community guidelines are as clear as a well-written spell scroll by a 20th level wizard: Be respectful, inclusive, and kind… or prepare to be removed from this plane faster than a goblin in a fireball’s blast radius.
Want to learn more? Check out our Online Safety Guide and watch the Platform Safety & Security Features tutorial to see it all in action.
Is this site only for hardcore or experienced gamers?
Nope. Not even close.
At Nerd Culture, we believe being a nerd isn’t about how long you’ve played, how many books you’ve read, or whether you’ve memorized every feat in the Player’s Handbook (but if you have… respect).
Being a nerd just means you’re passionate about something. We’re here to celebrate that, no matter where you’re starting from.
There is a seat at the table for you whether you’re just learning how to play D&D, coming back after a long rest, or already running your fourth homebrew world with multiverse-level lore.
And it’s not just for tabletop fans. Nerd Culture is for anyone who geeks out over something:
- Cosplay & crafting
- Coding & game dev
- Anime, books, and comics
- Hikes, haikus, or haunted houses
No gatekeeping. No power-level tests. Just community, curiosity, and a whole lot of nat 20 energy.
I’m a Pro DM with a lot of ratings. Can I migrate my reviews?
Yes! Please contact us and send your existing reviews, ratings and testimonials to our team. Once we review them, we will quickly migrate them onto your profile so that you don’t lose any of that hard work and recognition that you’ve earned at the tavern telling tales.
What is the difference between Nerd Culture and other platforms?
Short answer? We’re not here for brain rot, rage-clicks, or taking a cut of your adventuring loot.
Nerd Culture was built by fellow adventures for adventures. It’s here to help you find D&D players, connect with real people over shared passions, and build lasting friendships. It’s not just fleeting interactions or one-time sessions.
We’re not Facebook or Instagram. You don’t need to scroll through perfect highlight reels, friend your cousin’s ex’s roommate, or sacrifice your privacy to the algorithm gods.
We’re not Reddit. You’re not shouting into the void for imaginary internet points, hoping someone upvotes your character build.
We’re not Meetup. This isn’t just for random one-off events you’ll forget about by next weekend. It’s about building communities that keep questing.
We’re not Discord. You don’t need twenty invite links, ten bots, and a spreadsheet to manage one campaign.
And we’re definitely not StartPlaying. We don’t take a cut from your games, players, or campaigns. Whether you’re a pro DM running a paid campaign or a newbie organizing your first free D&D game, you keep what you earn. Most importantly, you control how you connect.
Instead, Nerd Culture gives you:
- Customizable profiles that actually reflect your interests and playstyle
- Free and paid groups—no fees, no cuts, no limits
- Powerful tools to run, find, and join ongoing campaigns, one-shots, or worldbuilding forums
- A customizable social feed where you see only what you care about (no drama bait, no rage threads)
- A real community where DMs, players, and creatives can thrive—without needing to stay locked into one app
This platform is for storytellers, dice rollers, character creators, meme posters, and lore nerds. For people who want more meaningful connections, deeper campaigns, and way less noise.
Basically? We’re not here to monetize your friendships. We’re here to help you form them.
Can I use Nerd Culture to play D&D online?
Absolutely. Many members run virtual games using platforms like Roll20, Foundry, or Zoom. You can search for online-only campaigns and connect with DMs and players from around the world.
What if I don’t find a D&D group or players near me yet?
That’s your cue to become the party leader.
Nerd Culture is a growing community, and sometimes that means you get to be the first to start something amazing. If you don’t see a match for your favorite game, hobby, or region, create a group, post your interests, and start casting locate person. You might be the missing piece someone else has been searching for.
If you want to start a D&D group in your city, host a virtual one-shot, or create a space for a niche system or fandom, we make it easy to launch something new. Add your favorite interests to your profile, tag your area, and let the magic of Nerd Culture do the rest.
Thousands of new members are joining all the time, and new communities form every day. So check back often, stay visible, and remember: every legendary campaign starts with someone saying, “Hey… anyone want to roll with me?”

Does Nerd Culture have a mobile app
Not yet—but it’s coming soon!
While we’re still putting the finishing touches on our mobile app (stay tuned—it’s just a few months away!), you can use Nerd Culture right now on any device. Our platform is fully optimized for mobile browsers, so whether you’re checking in from your laptop, your tricked-out gaming PC, your tablet, or your phone—we’ve got you covered.
The entire experience and all features work smoothly on any smartphone; from browsing groups and messaging friends to joining events and updating your profile.
So while we don’t have an official app just yet, you can still dive into Nerd Culture anytime, anywhere—and we promise, the full mobile app will be worth the wait. 😉
Is Nerd Culture a dating site?
Nope. We’re not here for swipes—we’re here for saving throws and adventuring party invites.
Nerd Culture is all about making real friendships, building communities, and connecting over the weird, wonderful stuff you love—like D&D, cosplay, game nights, or obsessive lore dumps at 1AM.
It’s not built for dating…
…but let’s be real: if two people lock eyes across a virtual battle map because they both play chaotic rogues with commitment issues, who are we to stop fate?
So no, we’re not a dating site. But if you happen to find someone who also alphabetizes their dice by damage type or gets emotional over critical role finales, we’ll quietly root for your NPC-to-LC (long campaign) arc. 💕
Roll for charisma. The rest is up to you and the dice gods.
Can I have multiple accounts?
Yes, you can create multiple profiles on Nerd Culture and easily switch between them, but each one will be associated to a unique email address and username.
There are many reasons why you might need more than one Nerd Culture account when making and finding friends online. For example, you might have a personal profile and a separate one for your business or influencer activities. In other instances you might want to have one dedicated to your D&D personas and adventures, while a second for your other interests and pursuits. In either, case you can also verify multiple accounts.
We recommend that you do not create extra accounts heedlessly. Accounts that are inactive or not adding to the platform for over 60 days will automatically be deleted, and the username will be recycled. We will not tolerate accounts used for parking usernames/urls, stalking others, fake accounts, or bots. Our team regularly audits accounts at mass for inappropriate usage or bots.
